Setting Sail for the Old World
Last April, my aunt and I embarked on a truly special journey: a 12-night transatlantic cruise aboard the Celebrity Equinox, a one-way voyage from the New World back to the Old. For my aunt, it was a poignant return across the ocean she’d last traversed as an 11-year-old leaving Sicily. This time, we were going the other way, a symbolic and emotional journey for us both.
Our balcony stateroom became our sanctuary, the door left ajar each night to let the fresh ocean air lull us to sleep. The Atlantic was a constant, breathtaking blue, the weather consistently perfect – a true blessing. This trip was about slowing down, savoring each moment, and prioritizing wellness. I walked miles each day, ate mindfully (carefully navigating the buffets!), swam daily, exercised, and even found time for dancing each night. Surprisingly, I even lost weight!
Bermuda: A Day of Underwater Wonders
Our first port of call was Bermuda. Instead of the usual crowded beaches, we opted for a glass-bottom boat tour, a fantastic choice! We explored vibrant coral reefs, glimpsed shipwrecks teeming with marine life, and enjoyed refreshing drinks under the Bermudan sun. A perfect day.
Azores: Discovering a Hidden Gem
After crossing a vast expanse of the Atlantic, we arrived at Ponta Delgada in the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago. This island was a true hidden gem, a place I’d happily fly directly to for a magical vacation. The island boasts stunning volcanic landscapes, including breathtaking blue water lakes nestled atop mountains. Our pre-booked private driver was an exceptional guide, taking us along roads lined with white calla lilies to these incredible vistas. After soaking in the views, we asked to be dropped off at a local, traditional restaurant. There, surrounded by locals and with no English spoken, we feasted on incredible fried fish, potatoes, hard bread, and local wine – exactly the kind of authentic experience I crave.
Porto, Portugal: A Taste of Portugal’s Finest
Our next stop was Porto, Portugal. With only a day to explore, we took a shuttle to the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro River, famous for its port wine cellars. We chose Cockburn’s for their museum and more tranquil atmosphere. The tour was fascinating, detailing the port wine-making process, culminating in a delicious tasting paired with cheese and chocolate.
Before getting back to the ship, we dined at O Gaveto, a seafood restaurant highly recommended by locals. It was hands-down the best seafood experience of my life. The seafood tower was a masterpiece, overflowing with every imaginable delicacy, from goose barnacles, lobster and uni to caviar. Whole fish, expertly prepared and served tableside, completed the feast. I definitely plan to return to Porto to explore more of the city.
Lisbon: A City of History, Music, and Delicious Treats
Finally, we arrived in Lisbon, where we spent five nights in a beautiful Airbnb in the heart of the city, close to the waterfront and everything we wanted to see. Tuk-tuks became our primary mode of transport for longer distances, thanks to a driver whose WhatsApp number we quickly acquired (getting a regular taxi or rideshare to our Airbnb was surprisingly difficult, perhaps due to it being around their Independence Day). Our first day led us to the Church of Saint Anthony, built on the site of his birthplace – a surprising discovery, as we’d always thought he was from Padua! As our family’s patron saint (we call on him whenever we lose something!), it felt like a special connection. Lisbon offered a wealth of churches, delightful octopus lunches, and our first of many pasteis de nata.
One of the most unforgettable experiences was an evening of Fado music at Lisboa em Fado. The passionate, melancholic Portuguese music was truly moving. We opted for a show with just a glass of wine, wanting to fully immerse ourselves in the music without the distraction of a full meal. Taberna Sal Grosso was another culinary highlight, serving traditional Portuguese cuisine in a warm and lively atmosphere.
Fatima: A Modern Pilgrimage
The true heart of our trip was a modern-day pilgrimage to Fatima. The spiritual energy there was palpable. We offered prayers, left flowers for loved ones, blessed ourselves in the holy water springs, and meditated in the three main churches. The image of the white statue of Mary, modeled after the apparition, remains vividly in my mind.
Hidden Gems and Culinary Delights
Throughout our journey, we also enjoyed discovering hidden gems in each city, trying local delicacies in unassuming restaurants and soaking in the unique atmosphere of each place.
This transatlantic cruise was an incredible experience. For those who enjoy cruising and the open ocean, I highly recommend it. While I’m not always a fan of large crowds, I’ve learned to find my own space and appreciate the unique magic of every journey. This trip was a reminder of the power of slow travel, the beauty of the sea, and the importance of connecting with our heritage.
