Old Montreal, Quebec

Like Europe without the Flight

by Melissa Hewitt

January 21, 2019

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in the Old-Montreal, the day after a snowstorm.

Whenever we start to get a little stir crazy or need a change of scenery (and language) we take a five-hour drive from The Hudson Valley to Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal). We gravitate there more in winter because in the summer we like to find beaches. It has everything you could want from winter, snow, horse-drawn carriages, cobblestone streets, rich history, amazing food, maple syrup snow candy, stunning architecture, and ice skating with views! It really is a winter wonderland. This year we’d like to try a spring and fall trip as well.

European Charm

Old Montreal is the part of downtown Montreal that has been preserved in much of its original state, with its oldest buildings dating back to the 1600s. Like Quebec City, Old Montreal has a very European character. Cobblestone streets, cafes and historic architecture from the 17th century give Old Montreal a quaint charm that is hard to come by. So far we’ve tried a new place each time we’ve visited, from a chain hotel, to boutiques hotels, and Airbnb flats, we’ve never been disappointed. We always find time for a horse-drawn carriage ride and we ask lots of questions. I used to pass these types of tourist attractions up but I’ve realized that this is a great way to meet locals that want to share about the history of their city. Especially if you’re genuinely interested! We always get off the carriage feeling like we’ve made a friend and have learned more about a place than we could have in months of trying on our own.

This spot holds a particular charm for us, as the sight of that blue glow pouring out onto the snow-filled streets and sidewalks were just magical. Also, sliding up and down those blue sidewalks might add a bit to it being particularly memorable. It was the first time in our life that we saw people shoe skating all over the city, and wearing crampons to get up the hills. To see the inside of this stunning cathedral go to a mass, or check the times when they run tours.

↑ Maple Syrup Snow Taffy

One of my son’s favorite things about Quebec is making maple syrup snow taffy. You’ll find stands on the street where they’ll pour a strip of warm maple syrup onto fresh snow, and you take a popsicle stick and roll up your own candy. I must admit that it’s one of my favorite things too!

March de la Villette

One of our favorite places to eat when visiting Old Montreal is Marché de la Villette. It just feels like stepping into a Parisian bistro, and the staff and owners always make us feel at home. This spot has ruined us for charcuterie anywhere else! We come in for brunch, we come in for lunch, and yup… even dinner. We’ve really got to get more adventurous.

We love gliding around the ice with the best view of Montréal. And we love taking a break at the cozy village right next to the ice and treating ourselves at Bistro Bonsecours even more! Skate rentals are available on site.

An old ferry transformed into a floating spa is exactly what this body needs after skating and walking miles of chilly streets. Bota Bota has five decks, a floating terrasse and restaurant, and a modern garden area, which house the various spa installations. Four saunas with incredible views onto the river and the Old Port, two eucalyptus steam bath, three outdoor whirlpool baths, one pool, numerous cold showers and baths, relaxation areas, and terraces. Yes, please!!!

↑ MAC Musée D’Art Contemporain de Montréal

Just outside but within walking distance of the old city is The Museum of Contemporary Art. We try to go every time we visit and the exhibits are always new and their collection is truly astounding. Founded in 1964, it is Canada’s first museum devoted to contemporary art. Do go.

Entirely devoted to science and technology, the centre has amazing exhibitions for children and parents alike. They use interactive devices in an innovative environment that are both educational and entertaining. Our son can’t wait to come any time we visit.

↑ Bevo Bar + Pizzeria

We just can’t help ourselves from stopping into Bevo when we come into town. The vibe is always great and the wood-fired pizza is really amazing… and we come from New York!
