↑ Whisking my husband, Jesse, away for a surprise birthday trip to New Orleans was a stroke of genius. What we thought would be a casual escape turned into a Mardi Gras experience, cramming more sights, sounds, and beignets into three days than we ever imagined possible!

↑ The Virgin Hotel was our haven in the heart of the CBD: stylish, modern, and pulsing with the same vibrant energy as New Orleans itself. Upgrading to an upstairs room was definitely worth it – the city views were amazing! Even better, though, despite being in the heart of the action, our request for a quiet room meant utter peace and quiet – not a peep from neighbors! It was the perfect blend of bustling city spirit and restful oasis.

↑ Our first drink stop was at Four Seasons’ Chemin à la Mer – a must for its legendary Mississippi views. But before stepping onto the balcony, we couldn’t resist diving into the hotel’s gorgeous main bar. Imagine a jewel box come to life – shimmering chandeliers cast a warm glow on plush armchairs nestled around intimate tables. Walls lined with vintage travel posters hinted at exotic adventures, while the air buzzed with a low murmur of anticipation. But the true pièce de résistance was the stunning bar itself, artfully crafted from onyx and adorned with delicate gold detailing. It was a prelude to the magic awaiting us – a decadent sip before surrendering to the breathtaking Mississippi sunset from the balcony.

↑ We headed over for a proper Cajun dinner at Cochon. This award-winning spot, housed in a restored 1920s warehouse, is famous for its house-butchered meats and innovative Southern cuisine. Let’s just say, the fire-grilled oysters, melt-in-your-mouth pork belly, and perfectly cooked swordfish were a delicious introduction to NOLA’s culinary delights.

↑ Mardi Gras magic ambushed us in the best way possible! We had no clue we’d stumbled upon the kickoff of Mardi Gras season! Suddenly, our waiter announced a vibrant parade was about to march down the very street we were on – Krewe de Vieux, with its risqué floats and infectious brass bands. Talk about a surprise baptism by fire into the New Orleans spirit! We were instantly swept up in the kaleidoscope of color and sound, our initial plans replaced by an unforgettable crash course in Mardi Gras revelry.
The iconic Bourbon Street felt overwhelming during Mardi Gras madness. But just a block away on Royal, we discovered a different vibe – relaxed, authentic, and undeniably charming. We walked 10 miles that first day, fueled by the city’s energy and charm.

↑ Day two began with a healthy dose of fresh-pressed juices at The Daily Beet, before we indulged in Southern comfort food heaven at Elizabeth’s in the Bywater, a much-loved, casual eatery known for its hearty portions of classic Creole and Southern cuisine. Bloody Marys, grits, praline bacon, and colossal fried oysters for brunch? Yes, please!

↑ While in the Bywater district, we wandered over to Bacchanal Wines & Spirits. This gem is an open-air oasis, the kind where you literally walk through a treasure trove of wines, selecting your perfect bottle (or two!). Stepping outside, you’re greeted by the sweet melodies of live jazz and a menu boasting delicious Mediterranean bites.

↑ A serene escape awaited us Uptown at Audubon Park, its birdsong, majestic trees and charming houses offering a welcome respite from the city buzz. A trolley ride through the Garden District, with its antebellum mansions adorned in Mardi Gras finery, transported us back to a bygone era.
That evening we headed to Magazine Street, offering a diverse shopping experience ranging from high-end boutiques to antique stores, art galleries, and local shops. A friend’s fervent recommendation led us to a hidden Peruvian gem for dinner: Tito’s Ceviche & Pisco. There, outstanding ceviche and hanger steak stole the show, while scoops of exotic Peruvian ice cream and sips of the unique Pisco, a Peruvian grape brandy, further fueled our unexpected flavor adventure. Try a flight or the pisco sour.
That night Frenchmen Street’s live music scene pulsated with energy. We stumbled upon the Treme Brass Band at DBA, their infectious tunes making us dance and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. The band is one of the most respected and sought-after brass bands in New Orleans, performing at festivals, parades, and events worldwide. They are the definition of New Orleans music! The Spotted Cat Music Club, another highly recommended gem, was also on our radar for its intimate setting and legendary performances.
For our last full day, coffee near out hotel at Lovage fueled our day of walking. We headed to Royal Street to explore, where we found Maskerade’s unique, artist-made masks, a must-see for any authentic souvenir enthusiast. I am a mask-maker (see Mystical Masquerades) and because of this trip I’m now one of the artists displaying there! To celebrate, we succumbed to the irresistible call of Café Du Monde’s beignets and their signature chicory-infused coffee, a classic NOLA experience.
The open-air French Market, a bustling marketplace dating back to 1791, offered a glimpse into the city’s vibrant spirit. We browsed through an array of vendors, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells of this historic landmark.
We took leisurely walk along the Mississippi River via Riverwalk. This 1.3-mile promenade stretches along the French Quarter riverfront, offering stunning views and led us to Drago’s, where we devoured their famous grilled oysters and a steaming bowl of gumbo. Ready for more, we visited the Sazerac Museum. This was no ordinary museum visit; it was a full-blown immersion into the spirit of New Orleans, with tastings all the way through! Forget dusty displays and hushed reverence – this place took us on a sensory journey through the iconic Sazerac’s history and cultural significance. Not only did we delve into the fascinating story of this beloved cocktail, but we also discovered a treasure trove of over 500 well-loved spirits from around the world! Now that’s an truly intoxicating experience!
The Carousel Bar at the historic Hotel Monteleone isn’t just a watering hole; it was a ride through time and fantasy. We perched on the coveted seats that gently rotate around a hand-carved carousel, each turn offering a fresh perspective of the lively scene (and the people waiting for a spot at the carousel:) Sipping their signature Vieux Carré, felt like a toast to New Orleans’ legend. Whispers of a resident ghost – a playful little boy – added a touch of the otherworldly. The Carousel Bar isn’t just a place to drink; it’s an immersive tale spun by history, myth, and a touch of whimsy.
Back on Bourbon Street, Jesse surprised me with a hidden gem called Fritzel’s, a haven for live jazz music. We soaked up the atmosphere and enjoyed the sounds of talented musicians while sipping one too many bourbons.Empty stomachs and happy hour led us to the iconic Brennan’s in the French Quarter, the birthplace of Bananas Foster. A packed house meant no table, but fate intervened! We snagged bar seats, rewarded with a front-row view of this legendary dessert’s fiery creation. A sweet twist on our dining plans, it proved that sometimes the best culinary discoveries happen when you least expect them, flambéed and delicious!
Blue Oak BBQ saved the day, or rather, the night. After a packed day of exploring, we were famished and craving something truly comforting. The first bite of their pulled pork nachos was the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The three-meat combo, each smoky morsel bursting with flavor, transported us to barbecue heaven—the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.
Our last morning began with coffees and macchiatos at the Virgin’s whimsical Funny Library Cafe. An Uber whisked us to the airport, but not before a delightful breakfast at the United Lounge, we’re part of the United Club and we really do recommend it for its perks. As we reflected on our whirlwind adventure, we realized that cramming three days of New Orleans into our schedule, amidst the unexpected Mardi Gras revelry, had created an unforgettable experience. NOLA’s infectious energy, delectable cuisine, and vibrant music scene had done their magic, leaving us humming its tune long after we left.
If you’re looking for a taste of New Orleans in the Hudson Valley, look no further than Jar’d Wine Pub and The Parish Restaurant in New Paltz. They have brought a slice of the Big Easy to the heart of Upstate New York, offering both a cozy wine bar and a vibrant Cajun-inspired eatery overlooking the Shawangunk Mountains. The transports you to New Orleans with gumbo, jambalaya, po’boys, blackened catfish, and gator bites, all washed down with classic cocktails like Sazeracs and Hurricanes!
A special thanks to Jackie Mansbach (Jesse’s Sister) and Theresa Fall (owner of Jar’d and The Parish) for their on point recommendations!
