Lake George, New York

Camping Northern Lake George With A Pop-Up Camper

by Melissa Hewitt

January 21, 2019

We chose to head up to Lake George for our pop-up camper’s maiden voyage. I had been fixing up this camper I got for $500 for over a year and this majestic lake seemed like the perfect christening. Nothing better than seeing a dream come to life. We actually drove about 45 minutes north of the town of Lake George to Rogers Rock Campground in Hague for real peace and quiet. This was a very early summer trip and the New York state-run campground had only recently opened for the year so we were able to get a super prime location right on the lake.

↑ The Pop-Up Camper

I’d been courting the idea of a pop-up camper for a few years. I was super inspired by The Pop-Up Princess website where you could see old crusty pop-ups become jewels. She had tips for every sort of renovation both interior and exterior. So I kept my eyes peeled for a good deal and one winter day I found an ad for a pop-up going for $500! There were lots of people saying they’d take it, but I called him and paid for it through Western Union within the hour, sight unseen. My husband would never have made a move like this, but I had an instinct. Yes, there was no title; a flat tire; the electrical system for the driving lights were down; the main crank cable was tied with a big knot; it didn’t close all the way, and there were some holes in the canvas… big deal!!! When I put my mind to something there’s really no stopping me. I got some help picking it up, as I didn’t have a hitch on my car yet, and we were on our way. Getting the title was a 6-month in-depth process, but yes, this baby is now on the road legally! A year later,  lots of scrubbing, new upholstery, two Tempurpedic mattresses, a new skylight, new table, some canvas sewing, a tow package, a paint job and… here we are at Lake George. I’m a proud mamma!

We couldn’t have had a better lakefront view if we’d paid thousands a night! So for $22 we were able to hear the lapping of the gentle waves on the shore right outside our camper.

↑ Out On The Lake

We didn’t realize that the campground would have canoes for rent so early in the year so we brought a little blowup dingy. Little is the definitely the word—if we moved just a bit to the left or right that tiny vessel would start taking on water! It might look cozy in the picture but they were actually sitting in a cold bath of water. We ended up renting a canoe for the day and were really able to get out and explore the lake. I love nothing more than being out on the water, so most of our trips are planned with that in mind.
