Bend, Oregon Itinerary: Where to Eat, Stay and Play

An Adventurer's Paradise

by Melissa

January 05, 2025

Last March, during the late winter season, we embarked on a special trip to visit my son, Malachi, who had recently moved to Bend, Oregon, with his wife Stella. It was our first time visiting them in their new home, and Malachi was determined to make it a memorable experience. The first part of our trip was nothing short of a late winter wonderland adventure, starting with a memorable stay at a historic landmark.

Smith Rock State Park: A High Desert Spectacle

On our way from Portland to Bend, the landscape gradually transitioned from snowy forests to the dramatic high desert terrain of Central Oregon, leading us to Smith Rock State Park. Words can hardly capture the awe-inspiring beauty of this place, even as late winter’s touch lingered in some areas. Imagine towering cliffs of volcanic rock, some rising hundreds of feet straight up from the earth, in shades of gold, orange, and red. These dramatic spires and canyons, carved by the meandering Crooked River, created a stunning contrast between the rugged rock and the hints of late winter greenery along the riverbanks. A world-renowned destination for rock climbing, we were mesmerized watching expert climbers tackle the challenging routes. We hiked along the river, craning our necks to take in the full scale of the rock formations and feeling dwarfed by their grandeur. The sheer scale and beauty of Smith Rock is truly something you have to experience to fully appreciate, regardless of the season.

Mount Bachelor: Late Winter Skiing and Snowboarding

Mount Bachelor in its late winter glory during March was a true treat for Milo, Malachi, and Jesse, who eagerly hit the slopes for a fantastic day of snowboarding and skiing. They carved through the fresh powder under the crisp March sunshine, making the most of the mountain’s renowned terrain in the excellent late winter conditions. On another evening, they were thrilled to experience the special magic of night skiing under the illuminated runs, a completely different and exhilarating way to enjoy the slopes even as winter began to wane. I, however, found my own kind of bliss in the cozy warmth of the lodge, happily nestled by the fire with a good book and the comforting warmth of a bourbon in hand, occasionally glancing out at the snowy wonderland. It was the perfect symphony of adventure for them across their days on the mountain, and peaceful relaxation for me.

Hoodoo Ski Area: Late Winter Night Skiing Thrills

Just a scenic drive from Bend, Hoodoo Ski Area offered a fantastic and family-friendly late winter experience during our trip for skiers and snowboarders alike. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and abundant snowfall, Hoodoo boasts well-groomed runs catering to all skill levels. A real highlight of our visit was the chance to experience night skiing in the late winter air. Carving through the snow under the stars and the illuminated slopes was truly exhilarating and created lasting memories. Whether we were enjoying the daytime runs with the Cascade Mountains as our backdrop or embracing the unique thrill of gliding down the trails at night, Hoodoo provided a welcoming and enjoyable late winter adventure near Bend that we won’t soon forget.

Lava Lands Visitor Center: Walking on Ancient Fire

Ever wanted to stroll across a landscape sculpted by raw volcanic power? Well, thanks to a fantastic suggestion from my son, we found ourselves doing just that at Lava Lands near Bend, Oregon, on the amazing Trail of the Molten Land! This easy-peasy, paved loop is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in a real lava flow, and it’s perfect for adventurers of all ages and abilities, regardless of the season. As we wandered along, we were surrounded by fascinating black rock formations, remnants of eruptions from thousands of years ago. It was a truly unique experience that made us feel like we’d stepped onto another planet, all thanks to Malachi’s great find! The trail offers incredible up-close views of the dramatic volcanic terrain, and you can really get a sense of the immense forces that shaped this area. We had a blast pointing out different textures and formations in the lava – it’s like reading a geological storybook etched in stone! Plus, being right at the base of Lava Butte added to the dramatic scenery. Trust us, walking through this ancient landscape, especially with family, is an unforgettable adventure and a super cool way to connect with the powerful history of the Pacific Northwest.

STAY

Timberline Lodge: A Majestic Mountain Retreat on Mt. Hood Oregon

Our journey began with a stop at the iconic Timberline Lodge, a historic landmark nestled on the slopes of Mount Hood. More than just a place to visit, the lodge itself was our first unique lodging experience. This masterpiece of craftsmanship stood majestically against the backdrop of the snow-capped peak. Its stone façade, adorned with intricate woodwork and wrought iron details, exuded a rustic charm that welcomed us in from the cold. Inside, the lodge was a cozy haven, with crackling fireplaces, plush armchairs, and the warm glow of vintage chandeliers. We spent the day exploring its many nooks and crannies, admiring the craftsmanship and soaking up the warm, inviting atmosphere. We also ventured out to take in the breathtaking views of Mount Hood, its snow-capped peak glistening in the sunlight in the late winter air. While skiing wasn’t on the agenda for this part of the trip, the epic mountain setting of our stay certainly inspired thoughts of future snowy adventures.
