Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The Perfect Summer Beach Experience

by Melissa Hewitt

June 25, 2019

Cape Cod is a perfect summer beach getaway. Each town on the Cape has something unique to offer in the way of natural beauty, history, the arts and entertainment. The Cape, about 70 miles in length with more than 500 miles of coastline, is subdivided into four to regions: Upper-Cape, Mid-Cape, Lower-Cape and Outer-Cape. Every summer we go camping in North Truro at the end of the peninsula right before Provincetown which would be considered the Outer-Cape.

PLAY

Head of the Meadow Beach

Truro offers some of the most secluded and beautiful beaches on Cape Cod and Head of the Meadow is no exception. This is our favorite beach as we can walk or bike ride to it from our campground and it’s great for kids as for most of the day the water forms a sort of safe lagoon. Surfing is allowed outside the main beach area, and there’s a pleasant two-mile Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail behind the dunes. We really love the homemade ice cream truck that comes most days, keep an ear out for its call!

EAT

Cape Tip Seafood Market

We generally cook our own meals at our campsite but when we go out we are definitely going for the seafood. The restaurants during the summer months usually have very long waits so this is our go to secret spot…shhhhhh! At this seafood market you can get the freshest local seafood and bring it back to your place or even better for us, they will cook certain things for you and you can eat on one of the few picnic tables outside. We always go for the lobster, steamers, corn and New England clam chowder. Can’t wait to go back!

LOCAL CULTURE & CRAFTS

The Fishing Culture

Cape Cod is all about fresh fish and fishing. You can charter a fishing boat and get a first hand look at life on the sea.

STAY

North Of Highlands Campground

We are madly in love with this pine tree shaded campground and make it a point to come at least once a year. We have always brought our tent but this year we purchased a teardrop camper so will be staying in that… we’ll keep you posted. We usually walk or ride our bikes to the beach every day which is so convenient. This campground is very family orientated, and has a short walking path through the “Cape Cod National Sea Shore” that leads you right to Head of the Meadow ocean beach. They have an on-site store, recreation room with fire place, pool tables & ping pong, library, laundromat, rest rooms, hot showers, and a playground. It is less than 10 minutes by car from bustling Provincetown and Wellfleet with plenty of shops, restaurants, art galleries and whale watching. One of our favorite things about this spot is that they strictly enforce quiet hours from 10pm to 7:30am—nothing worse than not sleeping because a group of teens with a keg pulled up next to you. Here you can only hear the ocean after 10pm.

There’s really so much to say about The Cape. You’ll just have to come out and see for yourself though!
